Warwickshire have announced the signing of South Africa’s fast bowler, Makhaya Ntini, who will step in to replace Zimbabwe’s allrounder, Heath Streak, for the final two months of the season. Ntini, 27, is pencilled in to join the club at the end of July, but a late alteration to South Africa’s international calendar is expected to hamper his availability.South Africa have shoehorned three one-day internationals against Zimbabwe into the end of July and the beginning of August, while Ntini can also expect to be selected for the Africa XI v Asia XI one-day series which takes place later in the same month. Warwickshire’s final Championship match of the season ends on September 24.”I am really looking forward to playing for Warwickshire,” said Ntini, who follows in the footsteps of his compatriots, Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock and Brian McMillan, in playing at Edgbaston. “They made it clear they had wanted to sign me for a while and were keen for me to help them in the second half of the season.”I also spoke to Pollock about it and he told me it would be a great experience for me to come and play in county cricket. I am feeling in good shape and now cannot wait to meet my new team-mates and get started.” Whether South Africa’s itinerary allows him to join so soon remains to be seen.
